Experimental Analysis of Intermittent Pumping Effects on Seawater Intrusion

چکیده

Abstract Time fluctuations of groundwater flux are known to affect solute transport and thus the width penetration seawater intrusion. Yet, most theoretical laboratory studies mixed‐convective processes accompanying intrusion assume constant extraction rates, even though real‐world pumping is usually intermittent. In this study, dynamic changes an experimental saltwater wedge caused by intermittent were explored using sand tank experiments numerical simulation. Three different aquifer systems assessed: a homogeneous unconfined aquifer, two stratified (aquifer‐aquitard‐aquifer), with latter having aquitard lower permeability. Both fully partially penetrating wells used. The effects period no‐pumping explored, nine performed in total. overall finding that impact non‐trivial. Under conditions, where head was prescribed inland (representative surface water body) allowed larger volumes freshwater be extracted before well salinization. This reflects non‐pumping periods allow recover. Additional modeling, which reproduced reasonably observations, showed salinization could avoided altogether sufficient recovery. Numerical models also used compare for same total rate, showing earlier compared pumping, although contained greater mass salt under pumping.

Modes of seawater intrusion during transgressions

Analytical methods and numerical experiments are used to study salinization of groundwater in response to sea level rise. The system that is studied involves a saturated porous medium with an inclined upper surface. The upper surface is progressively inundated during sea level rise to simulate transgression, the landward migration of the shoreline. Four "modes" of seawater intrusion are disting...

Formal derivation of seawater intrusion models

In this paper, we consider the flow of fresh and saltwater in a saturated porous medium in order to describe the seawater intrusion. Starting from a formulation with constant densities respectively of fresh and of saltwater, whose velocity is proportional to the gradient of pressure (Darcy’s law), we consider the formal asymptotic shallow water limit as the ratio between the thickness and the h...

Impacts of seawater rise on seawater intrusion in the Nile Delta Aquifer, Egypt.

Several investigations have recently considered the possible impacts of climate change and seawater level rise on seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers. All have revealed the severity of the problem and the significance of the landward movement of the dispersion zone under the condition of seawater level rise. Most of the studies did not consider the possible effects of the seawater rise on th...
